A Comparison of Substances Abuse in the U.S. and Canada

COMPARATIVE PAPER

You will write a comparative policy paper using Schmidt’s Writing in Political Science pages 240-246 as a guide.  The paper is to be approximately 14-15 pages typed, double-spaced, using Roman New Times including the title page and reference pages. Correct referencing and a reference page are to be included.  Referencing should be parenthetical in text and should include the page numbers (Naff  2008, 261-264).  The reference style should be Chicago Manual. See Schmidt pp. 159-162 for correct referencing of Chicago Manual.  Correct referencing should strictly follow the Schmidt guide.
Your paper will focus on an aspect of mental policy, administration, or services and will compare the American system with another country. Your paper must include an introduction, a comparison of the similarities and differences in the policy, administration, or services in the U.S. and in another country, and a conclusion on the significance of the similarities and differences.

Use the following main headings in your paper. Include appropriate subheadings according to the Schmidt text.

INTRODUCTION – 15 points
•    Briefly, identify and discuss the mental health issue that you are going to examine.
•    State what you are comparing – the U.S. and a second country (Canada)
•    Present the relevance of the comparison. Why is the comparison important?

MENTAL HEALTH POLICY IN THE U.S.  – 25 points
•    Describe how your mental health issue is handled in the U. S. Use examples.

MENTAL HEALTH POLICY IN (Canada)  – 25 points
•    Describe how your personnel issue is handled in the country you have chosen to research. Use examples.

SIGNIFICANT SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES – 25 points
•    Using the literature, discuss the significant similarities in how your mental health issue is treated in the U. S. and your country.   Offer an explanation or evidence of why they are similar.
•    Using the literature, discuss the significant differences in how your mental health issue is treated in the U.S. and your country.  Offer an explanation or evidence of why they are different.

CONCLUSION – 10 points
Summarize the key points of your paper.

Writing Guideline – use the following to correctly write and format your paper.

•    The paper should be typed in Times New Roman 12 point, indent paragraphs 5 spaces, and do not justify the right margin.
•    Include a title page.
•    Number your pages starting with the 2nd page of the main body of the paper.
•    The introduction and conclusion should be your own thoughts in your own words, do not reference.
•    Paragraphs in a research paper should have at least three sentences.
•    In the main body of the paper all paragraphs should have at least two sources/two references – this is a research paper.
•    Proofread carefully – check spelling and grammar – you will lose points for a poorly prepared paper. Try reading your paper out loud to make sure it makes sense.
•    Do not use more than two quotes. Short quotes – fewer than three lines – should have quote marks. Long quotes – over three lines- should be single spaced and indented five spaces from both margins.
•    Use the Schmidt book for the correct Chicago Manual format for in text referencing and for the reference page. In text references do not have a comma after the author’s name. A comma is only after the year before the page numbers. Use page numbers for all citations.
•    If a reference has no date use n.d.
•    The reference page is to be titled References not Bibliography and is to follow the Schmidt book for the correct Chicago Manual format. You will lose points for incorrect referencing.
•     Your originality score on Turn It In should be under 10%.
