Anaerobic respiration is the process of producing cellular energy without oxygen. Anaerobic respiration is a relatively fast reaction and produces 2 ATP, which is far fewer than aerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration happens in the cytoplasm where glycolysis releases energy from glucose and fermentation recycles NADH back to NAD+. Occur through anaerobic mechanisms, whether homolactic or alcoholic fermentation:

Instead of being immediately reoxidized after glycolysis step 5 as it would in aerobic respiration, the NADH molecule remains in its reduced form until pyruvate has been formed at the end of glycolysis. The pyruvate product of glycolysis gets further acted upon under anaerobic conditions by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).
