Appraise Area of Early Childhood Development

Appraise Area of Early Childhood Development

Week 3 Assignment: Appraise Areas of Early Childhood Development Activity Description The perspective of child development is crucial, allowing us to appreciate the cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and educational growth that children go through from birth into early adulthood. What we know about growth and development helps us to fight for our most important resource–our children. For this assignment, you have read Chapters 2 and 4 in your text and reflected on early childhood development. Incorporate the following into your paper: •The developmental areas of early childhood development: physical development, social and emotional development, cognitive development, and language development. •Highlight the major beliefs of the theorists in these areas of child development, explaining the similarities and differences proposed by the theorists. •Develop two activities in each developmental area that you believe supports growth. •Explain why each activity will be supportive and successful. •Support your activities with research. Support your paper with three scholarly references from peer-reviewed journals published in the past 7 years. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to the Northcentral Academic Integrity policy.

Introduction:
Appraising Areas of Early Childhood Development
Development follows predictable patterns. It progresses in a sequential and cumulative fashion such that children must master simpler tasks before they acquire more complex or difficult skills and concepts. Although the sequence of development is the same for all children, each child will develop at his or her own rate. Teachers can only approximate when children are typically expected to reach different stages of development. Thus, a teacher’s knowledge of principles of development, recent brain research, child development theory, and related issues influence decisions about the developmental appropriateness of practices for young children.

Assignment Preparation
1. Please see the Books and Resources for this week for your Required Readings.
2. Assume you are a teacher in a larger urban childcare center or school. Your children arrive at 7 a.m. and usually stay until after 5 p.m. each day. Think about what you would do first thing in the morning, using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to justify your answer.
3. Reflect on what you know about children’s needs and developmental stages. Consider their development and social class and cultural background.
4. Brainstorm, with the understanding that one area of development affects another, ways that social or emotional problems can affect other areas of growth.
