HI6008 Assessment Two
Business Research Literature Review
Due Friday 4pm of Week 06,
8-12 pages excluding references, worth 30%
This is an individual assignment.
Literature Review is to be submitted by Friday 4pm in Week 6.
This will consist of developing a comprehensive literature review chapter for the business research proposal. You will have to identify a business research topic, describe the literature on the research topic and provide hypotheses based on the literature for the research questions you have already defined in your research proposal in HI6007.
It is a special form of information gathering where you present the known body of knowledge relevant to the issue(s) or problem(s) you are addressing
The literature review is NOT just a string of authors, names, pages and references. It is structured as if you are developing an argument explaining why you need to undertake your research. Possibly, you might point to: a gap in the literature, or an issue or question that needs more evidence or research.
From week 04 and 05 tutorials you learnt how to develop a literature review.
A strong suggestion is to follow the following format discussed in week 05:
- Introduction to Literature Review
Start with introduction which includes a list of the topic you will do a literature review on, what your hypotheses are from these topics that you are starting out with (what you think is true about the topics).
E.g. I believe outsourcing for IT services I still growing and providing better quality for companies.
1.1 Topic 1
Define your 1st key word or phrase. Provide strengths and weaknesses from literature about the topic. Provide at least 4 references. Analyse your hypothesis about this topic and discuss your conclusion.
1.2 Topic 2
Define your 2nd key word or phrase. Provide strengths and weaknesses from literature about the topic. Provide at least 4 references. Analyse your hypothesis about this topic and discuss your conclusion.
1.3 Topic 3
Define your 3rd key word or phrase. Provide strengths and weaknesses from literature about the topic. Provide at least 4 references. Analyse your hypothesis about this topic and discuss your conclusion.
1.4 Topic 4
Define your 4th key word or phrase. Provide strengths and weaknesses from literature about the topic. Provide at least 4 references. Analyse your hypothesis about this topic and discuss your conclusion.
Add Topics as you see fit to build your literature review here ….
1.5 Conclusion:
Finish with conclusion which includes a list of the topic you discussed in the literature review, a summary of what your literature research discovered and a conclusion on the hypotheses from these topics that you started with.
(E.g. After studying the literature on outsourcing for IT services, there are a lot of issues in quality of customer service and product quality when it comes to some of the outsourcing IT service providers.)

HOLMES INSTITUTE POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS At Holmes Institute, the Master of Business Administration, Graduate Diploma in Business and the Master of Professional Accounting programs offer domestic and international students the opportunity to study a set of contemporary subjects in the field of business. These subjects prepare students for the challenges in business environments of the 21st century. These programs emphasize the global and cross-cultural dimensions of business. Teaching utilizes a combination of delivery methods and includes critical analysis and case study methods. A combination of exams, case studies and company analysis are used in assessment. The Masters’ programs of Holmes Institute focus on: Developing career related capabilities Business numeracy and literacy Developing managerial proficiency Working in the new economy Leadership skills Entrepreneurship Social responsibility and ethics SUBJECT OVERVIEW & RATIONALE Welcome from your Supervisors: Welcome to HI 6008 Business and Enterprise Capstone Project. This capstone subject of your MBA course is process-oriented rather than concept-oriented. By this we mean that this subject is not intended to add to the set of concepts you have already gained from all the other MBA subjects. Instead, it focuses strongly on the processes involved in utilizing those concepts in a substantial business project and on the processes involved in communicating your ideas in an effective manner. The main outcome from this subject is your project report which is a key element in your personal portfolio which you will use in interviews and carry with you from job to job for life as an illustration of your capabilities. From your first day appointed to a new job, as an MBA graduate, you will be expected to be a ‘self-starter’ capable of independent work. It is likely that your immediate supervisor will delegate a project to you to give you a chance to demonstrate your capabilities. The project will have a strong business focus e.g. What are the business implications for our company in changing our broadband provider switching to the National Broadband Network. While you can expect some help from your immediate supervisor, they will not be impressed if they have to ‘nurse’ you through every step of the way through the project. Companies will expect you, as an MBA graduate, to be capable of conducting creative, innovative and productive research under minimal supervision. This subject will prepare you for undertaking independent project work. Such projects commonly take the following form: first, through consultation, you will have to develop and agree a plan outlining the tasks associated with the project together with negotiated deadlines; then you will dig out relevant facts (research); and ultimately develop, document, and then deliver your findings in an effective manner. As has been mentioned above, this final report constitutes a key element of your personal portfolio. In business, live presentation is also a common means of delivering a message effectively. The opportunity to develop that skill is provided by the Seminar Program which is integral to this subject. You may deliver your seminar either at the beginning, during or at the end of your project. HI 6008- Business and Enterprise Capstone Project T2 2015 3 Summarising: By the end of this subject you will have: Planned a major project Completed this business-related project which attests to your ability to plan and implement a substantial body of work Compiled it as a key element of your personal portfolio to be used in interviews and carried around from job to job for life Presented your work to a panel of experts and peers Extending your capstone project A further opportunity to extend the capstone project in subsequent semester(s) is provided for those students interested in qualifying for the doctorate level studies and/or conducting business research as a career. Students who choose this option continue with their project into the next semester deploying qualitative and quantitative techniques to complex business problems. Research questions are defined, primary and secondary data are collected, analysed and interpreted. Statistical techniques and SPSS® are used to produce a final capstone project thesis and final project presentation. To achieve these aims the extended business research capstone project will address: the principles of business research; how to frame and generate research questions; ways of asking questions that can be researched, the history and variety of the major research paradigms; the theory of measurement, scaling and numbers; ways of choosing a research methodology; sampling theory – its logic and application; the major methods of data collection – surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and indirect methods of data collection; the formal experiment; and qualitative and quantitative analysis of data. Core knowledge and skills elaborated also include the following statistical topics: descriptive statistics which includes displaying and summarising data; using random variables and their distributions; normal and binomial distributions; sampling distributions; hypothesis testing; confidence intervals; t-tests; regression and correlation; chi-square tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA). A statistical language will be introduced as well as the logic of statistical testing using SPSS®, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Students will receive detailed instruction for the use of SPSS®. SUBJECT OBJECTIVES On successful completion of this subject you will have the ability to: 1. Use action research to synthesize important relationships across business disciplines 2. Interpret ethical and legal concerns of stakeholders and be able to comply with codes and regulations 3. Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing ideas and arguments associated with business issues 4. Explain and apply analytical constructs to business problem solving. 5. Design organizations to make and implement specific business decisions under given performance requirements 6. Design and interpret several different performance measures specific to business outcomes 7.
