Child prostitution and sex trafficking is known to be a big problem in Romania, so Liviu goes back to his hometown to do more research about this problem.Sex trafficking can be defined as the form of modern slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally. Victims of sex trafficking can be men, women, children, US citizens, and foreigners (Sex Trafficking 2015). This documentary shows us the trafficking that occurs with young boys in Romania and Italy. When someone acts deviant, he or she is acting in ways that society disvalues, finds unpleasant, condemns, and violate the norm (Clinard & Meier, 2013). And there are many theories as to why people are involved in deviant behavior. One theory that relates to this documentary is the socialization theory. This theory states that people engage in deviant behaviors such as drug use and crime because of interactions with other individuals (Oetting & Donnermeyer, 1998). Many of the boys in this film were involved in sex trafficking from as young as 12 years old along with getting high from sniffing things. According to the boys they had no choice but to do this because they need money in order to survive.People and children that are involved in sex trafficking are usually taken against their will. Sex trafficking is considered a transnational organized crime (Sex Trafficking Sociology). Many people are told they are being sent to another country for job opportunities, just like the girl from the film. When Liviu interviewed her she said she thought she was coming for a bar job until she actually got to Milan and learned what she really came for, prostitution. The boys and girls in this film were involved in a serious crime; a crime is anything that is a violation to the criminal law. The most common type of prostitution is a streetwalker. This is when men, women, and or children stand in public places like street corners or bus stations for potential clients (Clinard & Meier).Liviu wanted to learn more about a trafficker named Tom. Tom has a network of young boys and gives them off to other men in exchange for money. After sending Tom an email, Liviu finally gets a response and has his friend Andrew meet with him. Tom thinks Andrew is a client looking to have sex with a young boy. When Tom and Andrew meet he shows Andrew his website where he has the ability to pick and chose which boy he wants. Tom tells Andrew a bit about his business and how he sends off the boys to other countries to be with clients. After picking a child, Andrew goes back to a hotel with a boy named George and gets some more information from him. George explains how he became apart of this business when he was 14 and did so because he needed the money (The Child Sex Trade, 1990).Even though the kids in the documentary strongly disliked what they were doing, they justified their reasoning by saying they had no choice but to do this so they could make money to eat food and live. Not only is prostitution considered a crime, but homosexuality is also seen as deviant behavior. Clinard & Meier (2013) state that homosexuality is deviant because it goes against the norm. The documentary exemplifies how the boys involved in sex trafficking are being set up with other men, some being individuals no one would think to be involved, for example a judge. Although homosexuality is not a crime, people still view it as deviant behavior. References Clinard, M. B., & Meier, R. F. (2013). Sociology of Deviant Behavior (15th ed.).
