After the plane crash, the two boys are stack on their won at an isolated highland. The two boys go through many difficulties that affect their mentality and reasoning capacity (Olsen, p 17). After the two boys get stack at the isolated island for quite some time, they start to conform to the new environment and they start coming up with strategies to form a society of their own. The idea of starting up a new society of their own is not virtually a smooth one. It is faced with many challenges that bring out the difference in character traits between the two boys. Although the two boys have difficulties while conforming to the idea of coming up with a new society which is made of their principles and aspirations, they formulate a smart way to do so. The two young men built both social and poetical lifestyles through imagination. Through this, it is evident how civilization and salvage contradicts between these major characters. The entire book revolves around the two young men while under various life situations. The book majorly dwells on how the two young men struggle hard to start up a new form of life from nowhere. The two young men are basically in the verge of adopting new principles and living modes so as to fulfill their heart desires of coming up with a new form of life (Olsen, p 73). Critical analysis The books plot revolves around various aspects and one of them is war. The cruelty displayed during the war displays the various faces of the human nature. The war displays the bad side of the human nature; this is just a perfect example to display the various faces of human nature (Golding, p 51). Civilization is the way in which people live and work towards bringing a certain permanent change based on certain principles. On the other hand, Savagery is the ultimatum change that is inspired by words and actions. Savagery is a situation whereby a person or a group of people are changed or transformed through actions and words. Although civilization is a gradual process, it comes in to change the way people live and associate with one another entirely. Savagery is ultimately a process that can take lesser time to manifest itself. This separates the civilization and savagery. Civilization is gradual and it transforms the way of living completely while savagery mainly targets certain aspects of life (Golding, p 69). In the novel, the roots of civilization start to grow when the two young men engage start thinking how they can create a new society that runs on their ideologies. Civilization in actual sense begins through the formation of transforming principles. The conch plays an important role when it comes to inspiring the boys to kick-start the journey of civilization. The destruction of crunch to a larger extend affects the two boys negatively (Sinfield, p 47).The conch symbolized the move transformation into civilization mode and that is the main reason why the two boys used it as an inspiring aspect to other people to start reasoning like them. Through the crunch, the two boys formed a platform that would take them and everyone else into the land of civilization. Savagery is virtually an action-inspired change. This is well displayed with the different lifestyles both boys Roger and Henry experienced. Back from where they came from, everything was in very especially food and other necessities. After getting lost in the island, everything changes completely. Food, shelter and all other necessities were no longer easily available. This means that they had to struggle in order to attain what they need. The change in their life influences by the fact they had to do something in order to survive. The actions they engaged in order to transform their living standards bring out a clean picture of savagery. Action and mentality inspired the change that they witnessed in their life. The two encounters separate civilization and savagery. Civilization is all about a gradual revolutionary change while savagery is action-influenced change that establishes its effectiveness within a short period (Sinfield, p 58). When the two boys convene a meeting in the highland, their main aim is to come up with rules and regulations to govern the highland. Apart from drafting rules and regulations, the main agenda of the two young was to administer change based on their ideologies. The two boys intend to transform the entire society through their principles. The process of coming up with principles that change the ways and standards of living is a way of paving way for civilization to take place. Before the two boys introduced civilization in the island, people could kill each other randomly but after reasoning together with the two boys, such kind of acts came to a complete stop. After that incident, people approached everything in a systematic and mature manner. This is an actual display of how civilization works out in transforming gradually the way people and relate with one another (Freeman, p 29). The main goal of civilization is to change the way people live and it is very evident right here when the two boys work towards administering permanent change in the island. When it came to the matters of surviving in the island, the two boys had some difficulties adjusting. This was because life was very different where they came from. This is the main reason why they had some difficulties adjusting to the new island life. The two boys had difficulties while hunting because they had a negative mentality towards it. They though that hunting was impossible for them because they had never had a mentality change or action provocation. In the first day of hunting, the boys could cover themselves with mud as camouflage; later on, they learnt a new hunting methodology. They learnt to cut ,kill and spill blood. This method was far much easier and convenient than the previous one. After the change of mentality and the provocation that came with actions, the two boys learnt something new and vital. Therefore, savagery revolves around change of mentality and action aid to achieve intended results. Savagery results are obtainable within a short duration of time unlike those of civilization (Freeman, p 39) Conclusion Civilization and savagery come out clearly in the entire novel. Although they are co related in some instances, the contradiction between the two opens up an highway for the critical analysis of the two. The two boys try to build a new society in the island through bringing in new ways of living. This can virtually translates into civilization. Civilization is a process that is gradual and slow. It takes a lot of time to transform the peoples mentality and ways of living though after some time the two boys manage to pull it through. Savagery is basically way composed and quick compared to civilization. It comprises of change in mentality and action provocation. Through change of mentality and action, a person is able to transform themselves completely. The boys manage to learn hunting and later on, it becomes a part of their lifestyle.
