Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation
Order Description
Assessment Semester B 14-15
The assessment for semester B is in two parts but still forms one piece of work. The first element is centred on a 2000 word case study of the student’s choice, in which they need to apply, evaluate, and justify key entrepreneurial theory gained in semester A, (the case study MUST be different from any used in semester A) in order to aid and add academic rigor to their study. The theories need to be applied within their respective contexts, in order to show how the business and owner/founder can be termed entrepreneurial. Finally, you need to identify if the business could be more entrepreneurial in its outlook or trading habits/style. Again, you need to justify any recommendations you suggest and state how this would alter or change the business, its market or any other element of its trading in any way.
The second element is a 2000-3000 word business plan, based on a theoretical business idea of your choice. You need to identify a business idea and research the market you wish to enter and state how you intend that your product or service can be successful. You also need to clearly identify your target market, state who they are, and say how you intend to attract them through an effective marketing strategy. You also need to include a realistic financial plan which includes start up costs, break even analysis and profit and loss accounts within it. The plan needs cover a period of 5 years which has a start-up capital of between £5,000-20,000.
Assignment Marking Guide
The Case study
• The student needs to clearly state the operation of their host business, its core and mode of operation. You also need to say how the business is structured; size and any entrepreneurial factors that you may consider have an effect on the success of the business. You need to say if you are examining just one part and if this is run by a manager or founder of the business.
• You need to examine the host business in light of key entrepreneurial theory and state how this may have affected the operation and direction of the business over a period of time. This needs to be related to key author debate and argued as such. Please do not describe this part of your work, it needs to offer conflicting elements of theory.
• The final part put you in the role of a consultant; therefore you need to examine the business in all its elements and state how it may be run differently. You need to offer innovate and entrepreneurial ideas that may improve the overall aspect or areas of the operation. This part again needs to be related to theoretical debate.
The Business Plan
• You may follow the example given under learning materials on blackboard, but guidance needs to sort from your seminar tutor in regard of specific content.
• The plan needs to offer a credible business idea which has a start-up capital of between £5-20,000. The idea can be either a manufactured item or a service offered to a specific section of the community. This needs to be clearly stated within the introduction of your plan.
• The plan needs to include specific marketing and financial sections as given in the assessment details section of blackboard. The plan needs to be a professional document in a separate folder section of your overall semester B assessment. It needs to be a credible document and of the standard that would be given to any person wishing to source finance for the venture, bank, venture capitalist etc.
