Environmental Assessment and Management
This module aims to provide knowledge and critical insight into environmental practices of
pollution prevention. A particular focus on relevant environmental practitioner requirements in
industry is provided. it focuses upon common commercial pollutants and the systems that govern
their control and management in the workplace also considering the policy and legal basis.
Practitioner management techniques and methods are provided with the objective of developing
competence in assessing and managing workplace environmental aspects to improve legal
compliance and environmental performance.
M.Sc. Learning Outcomes
On complete of this module, successful students will be able to:
1. Critically explain and evaluate the core components of environmental management systems
as they relate to principles of pollution prevention.
2. Critically analyse and assess the environmental risks associated with common commercial
and industrial processes.
3. Critically evaluate the main environmental management requirements based in legislation, and
the roles and functions of environmental regulators.
4. Exhibit applied competence in management techniques in the assessment and management
of the environment to improve environmental performance.
5. Critically explain the concept of Best Available Technology (BAT) in the context of industrial
environmental management; and appraise the process of management and control within the
context of pollution prevention.
M.Sc. Syllabus:
Introduction to Environmental Management Systems- principles, benefits, ISOl4000/EMAS,
management techniques.
Critical risk analysis and assessment of commercial pollutants in the environment (water,
waste, air and soil) and key principles of pollution prevention and related legislation.
Managing Environmental Performance – Objectives and Targets; Auditing and Operational
Control. Stakeholder Engagement & Business Case
Pollution Prevention Control Licensing and the role of the Environment Agency
Legislation – BAT principles – Licence Application Requirements – Monitoring Requirements
M.Sc. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy
Theoretical material will be explored by lectures from tutors and selected external experts.
Real world case studies will be evaluated in a number of ways – for example, through analysis
during tutorials; discussion with external practitioners or calculations from provided data
Seminars will be used to extend the theoretical material using group interaction, practical case
studies and problem based exercises including small group work to further investigate,
analyse and apply concepts to real world scenarios.
