Genetic Traits from diseases

Genetic Traits from diseases

For this essay you will compare and contrast two observable human traits that result from some known genetic influence and result in some type of variation in the human population. The trait you choose can be any physical or biochemical characteristic or disease that produces a phenotype (i.e. it can be observed in some way other than by sequencing the genetic material of the individual with the trait) that is variable (i.e. not everyone is identical) • Clearly identify and describe each observable trait you are comparing • Identify the specific genetic factor associated with each trait • If known, describe the type of mutation that occurred to produce each trait or variation (e.g. aneuploidy, deletion, insertion, missense, nonsense, translocation, etc.) • Describe how individuals who vary in each trait are different on the genetic, macromolecular, cellular, and organismal level • Describe what is known about the evolution of each trait (i.e. when and where did it first appear, where and when did it spread to the larger population, what factors affected the frequency and distribution of the trait, what other changes have occurred to the trait over time) • Compare and contrast the frequency and distribution of each trait (e.g. age, ethnic group, gender, geographical, etc.) • If the cause of variations in either trait is 100% genetic, state so; otherwise describe which and how other factors also contribute to variations in the trait • Base all statements on appropriately cited evidence • At least four sources of information should be cited. At least one primary source (i.e. original scientific report) should be used; the majority of other sources should be secondary (e.g. description of primary scientific source(s) in a scientific, educational, or news magazine, paper, or website); few if any sources should be tertiary (e.g. blogs, third party commentary on secondary sources,.org or .com websites)
