3 this one is just a reply-
Ms. Collins,
I never really took time to think about how far reaching processes improvement is until this class. I understood the concept of reducing defects in production and a company’s product so they meet or exceed customer expectations and helping reduce costs. I never understand the scope of cost from defects or problems in manufacturing. I am a biker so I researched Polaris Industries Inc. the new owner of Indians motorcycles for my paper last, and one of the weakness were problems with their painting process so they were having a hard time meeting customer demand for the Indian motorcycles and one of their goals was reducing warranty costs(“COMPANY PROFILE Polaris Industries Inc.,” 2014). I never really thought about how much it would cost if a company had to do a lot of warranty repairs and replacement. Just like massive product recalls, if a company does not eliminate problems and improve the quality of their product it can be fatal for the company. So process improvement has to be part of any company’s strategy. I was amazed at the saving created by process improvement. The text gave this example “Savings attributed to Six Sigma programs have ranged from 1.2% to 4.5% of annual revenue for a number of Fortune 500 firms. Firms that have successfully employed Six Sigma are General Electric, Allied Signal, ABB, and Ford Motor Company.54 About 35% of U.S. companies now have a Six Sigma program in place.55At Dow Chemical, each Six Sigma project has resulted in cost savings of $500,000 in the first year” (Hunger & Wheelen, 2010, p. 290). I am sold on the importance of process improvement.
