It a cultural story that has increased interest in America since the in September 11, attacks. The book provides a good presentation of the Afghan culture and history. The story shows how stratification plays a great role in the society. For instance Hassan a poor Muslim boy and Amir a boy from a wealthy family lead a different life due to the unequal distribution of wealth h in the nation. The story is also told during the events of the fall the Afghanistans monarchy, intervention of the Soviet military and the rise of the Taliban regime. The issue of race plays a key role in The Kite Runner. Hassan and Amir come from different ethnic groups. Amir talks of how the Hazara community has been erased from the Afghanistan school books since the Pashtuns control the society. The Hazara people are mistreated by the Pashtuns. Amir finds his way in the world by realizing that his own belief is not that of his dominant Afghani culture. There are several examples of discrimination and biases in the book which include the example of the relationship between the Hazara and the Pashtuns. Historically the Hazara people are prosecuted and demeaned by the Pashnuts. Amirs father sets a good example of raising Ali in his house after the death of Alis parents. Hassan and Ali are associated with the marginalized group of people in the society. The ruling class considers them as of lesser value due to their religious belief ethnic origin and social standing. After reading the book I liked it more because it brings out the idea of finding out ones place in the world of transition and turmoil. Yes the book affected me through the writers narrative technique how he combined flash forward and flash backs in a somewhat linear time line. Works cited Hosseini, Khaled. The Kite Runner.
