Advise:For the readings you should look at week 3 on the State and Development and week 11 on South Korea. You should start with the essential readings, but also those marked with ** are generally a lot more accessible.
I think doing a comparison of Taiwan and South Korea is fine. But it might be simpler to focus on just one – in which case, I suggest you look at Korea.
A question might be: ‘Analysing the role of the state in the development of big business (chaebol) in South Korea’
That would allow you to argue that things have changed over time. So, to get the firms started and to be competitive, the state played a major role (infant industry development), but from the 1997 crisis onwards and liberalisation, the big chaebol now global firms. Or something like this.
