Each team is to analyze any two (2) of the following industry-specific  informational areas for the industry environment: (1) technological; (2) political; (3) competitive; (4) regulatory; (5) social; and (6) economic.     This analysis is completed at a much narrower perspective.  Plan for one (1) full page per informational area discussed.

Service Area Competitor Analysis

The Service Area.

For this section, please identify the geographical area to be covered.  It is easiest to identify a county as your primary service or market area.  Once the market area has been identified, you will need to obtain and report on pertinent demographic information related to your service area.  One great website for this exercise in southeastern Michigan is: www.semcog.org .  In addition, you can access the U.S. Census Bureau and/or the State of Michigan website for demographic information.  This section should be approximately two (2) full pages.

Competitor Analysis.

There are likely multiple competitors in your service area.  However, for this exercise, please identify 3-4 competitors within your identified market area.  Then, identify the strengths and weaknesses of each competitor chosen.  This section should be approximately three (3) to four (4) pages.

Service Delivery. 

For purposes of this exercise, please analyze the point-of-service.  In your analysis of the point-of-service, first identify the strengths and weaknesses.

Competency – the collective knowledge and skills possessed by individuals may be a source of sustained competitive advantage for the organization.

 

Capabilities – an organization’s ability to deploy resources and competencies, usually in combination, to produce desired services.  Capabilities fall into one of the following two categories:

  • The ability to make dynamic improvements to the organization’s activities through learning, renewal, and change over time; or
  • The ability to develop strategic insights and recognize and arrange resources and competencies OR to develop novel strategies before or better than competitors.

 

Third, based on this evaluation, identify if the point-of-service for your health service organization is a competitive strength or weakness.  This section should be one (1) to two (2) pages.
