INSTRUCTIONS
Read these instructions carefully and in full. Failure to follow these instructions will impact your grade.

GETTING STARTED
1. The question has been written in such a way as to all you to narrow your focus if you wish. For example, if you wish to focus on a particular ‘sub-region’ or ‘sub-regions’ in the Asia Pacific, then you may do so.
Another way of narrowing down your focus is to explore one or two examples that you use in more depth, or you may wish to focus on one or two main issues within your topic area. Striking the right balance between breadth and depth is part of the skill in constructing a well-crafted response. For example, focusing on one example to the exclusion of everything else may not provide a broad enough basis of support for your main contentions. You would likely want to augment this more in-depth exploration with other, supporting information and examples.
One of the most effective ways of narrowing down your response is by focusing on a number of arguments that you consider to be the most important and relevant to the question. For an essay of 1800, perhaps somewhere between 2-4, depending on complexity.
2. Consider how you will organize your essay. Remember that the purpose of an essay is to present your discussion. Therefore, the essay and its organization should serve as a vehicle for your presentation of your arguments that logically lead to your conclusions. It is not enough to simply describe the area of focus and any concepts.

YOUR ESSAY
3. Your essay must demonstrate your understanding of the topic area and any key concepts invoked. Essentially this is a written debate where you are using your reasoning skills, backed up by carefully selected evidence to make your arguments and point out the advantages and disadvantages of the given context. Remember to arrive at a conclusion.
4. In your introduction you should explain the scope of your essay, indicate what your main arguments are as well as indicate the structure of your essay.
5. You may use personal pronouns. Eg. “In this essay I will argue”…. “I conclude”, rather than using cumbersome passive sentences and indirect language. It may also assist in sharpening your attention on what your position is and what arguments you are making and thereby avoid falling into the trap of providing a descriptive essay or one that does not address the question.
6. You may use headings to organize the main body of your essay. If you use headings think about the utility of your headings. Headings should provide the reader with an accurate indication of the content. While some general descriptive headings are useful, sub-headings that indicate the argument are better than general, descriptive headings. Eg. “Lack of leadership by powerful states on human rights enforcement” is better than “States and human rights enforcement”.
7. You must write in full paragraphs. A paragraph is not normally longer than one-half or two-thirds of a page and usually consists of a minimum of three sentences. Only very occasionally is a paragraph of one sentence appropriate. (See the last very sentence of the Great Gatsby for a good example of a one-sentence paragraph used for impact.)
Paragraphs should appear as a single block of text and be separated by a space. Do not separate the sentences in your paragraphs using indents. Look at good quality academic journals and follow their example.
You should use paragraphs as a means to present your points of discussion or arguments, which develop your overall argument. See the ‘Take Home Exam – writing an effective essay presentation” for some further guidance.
8. All work must be fully referenced. You must choose a reference system that includes pinpointing text. I.e. it is not enough to cite paraphrased text or an idea to an article or book, you should pinpoint the place in the text or book where the idea can be found.
9. Sloppy referencing, usually as a consequence of cutting and pasting text from the internet, was a common point of criticism in the research essays submitted by on campus students. Make sure your references are complete – ie include all bibliographic detail and are formatted correctly for the type of source. Eg. If you are using a peer reviewed journal (whether accessed on line or not), your reference should consist of the article bibliographic details, not the webpage/link.
10. Any references that contain text (for example, quotes, further discussion, examples etc) will be counted in the word limit.
11. Use an 11 or 12pt font and leave margins of 3cm on both the left and right.
