  1. If a health care organization, such as a hospital, carefully formulates and implements a strategic plan, exactly what differences can it expect to see in four or five years?

Chapter one broke down to us the definition of strategy.  In this, it also tells us how to decipher if you are indeed using strategies or merely planning.  Strategy has a set of key dimensions and if used correctly could bring insight to your company.  Strategic planning is the process of defining an organizations future direction, the components of which are an organizations vision, mission, values and strategy. “The very first step in a strategic planning and management process is an organizational self-examination, an internal audit of what the organization has to work with.”(III 32).  Like any organization looking for success, chances are a hospital that formulates a strategic plan will achieve that goal. Strategic planning looks three to five years ahead. It charts a definite course based on strong indicators of what the business environment will be like in those years.

Indicators include census demographic statistics, economic indicators, government policies, and technological advances. They reveal strong trends regarding changes in lifestyles and the economic and political climates, which are important factors influencing the facilities planning and management industry (Ahoy, 1998).
Having said that, depending on the size and competition of the hospital it should expect to see volumes of change within its facility.  Through this plan its employees, stakeholders and shareholders will get a chance to substantiate their credibility while offering improving the communication and commitment to the organization.  If the plan consisted of changing directions with certain departments, this changes should visible to not only employees but to patients as well.  The power behind strategic planning can only be prevalent if conducted properly.  It is up to those who are on the committee to thoroughly process the information to all parties involved.

“ Strategic plan is concerned with the widest scope of organizational activities, frequently encompasses the broadest geographic area, affects and involves the largest number of employees, costs the largest amount of money, and takes the longest period of time to implement” ( Moseley, 2009).

If a health care organization, such as a hospital, carefully formulates and implements a strategic plan, it will be able to counter the competition by constantly adjusting the hospital to the imminent changes that will occur both internal and external. “The purpose of formulating and implementing a new strategy is to engage the organization in performing activities that are different from those of its competitor” (Moseley, 2009).

With effective strategic planning, an organization can expect to see long term differences regarding ways it will be able to secure a desirable future for its stakeholders, while encouraging imagination, innovation and forward thinking in response to an ever-changing external environment.  “The existence of a strategic plan coupled with organizational commitment to its implementation stimulates and energizes the people carrying out the strategy” (Moseley, 2009). With a strategic plan in place, the organization will experience higher levels of achievement than would be possible without a coordinated, inspired focus on the future.
