Assessment 2: Reflective Journal
Due Date: Week 14 (Friday – 23rd October, 2015 at 4:00pm)
Length: Maximum 1250 Words
Weighting: Worth 40% of Unit Assessment
Instructions: Students are required to submit their hard copy assignment accompanied by a
signed Assignment Cover Sheet to the Assignment Box located on Level 1 in Building 5 at
Bankstown Campus. The assignment must also be submitted to Turnitin for electronic text
match. A copy of the Turnitin receipt (Similarity Index) must be affixed to the back of the
hard copy assignment.
Aims/Objectives
This assessment task aims to involve students in a critical and analytical manner relating to
one’s work in progress. It serves as a means of communication, for instance, between the
material and the student, a platform for synthesising knowledge and ideas, an instrument for
understanding unfamiliar terms and clarification for difficult concepts, a pathway for educing
topics of interest, an opportunity to challenge the topic and contribute to its improvement, and
helps develop critical thinking. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate evidence of
consistent critical thinking and explore possible solutions to the problem or issue and identify
new insights and problem solving strategies.
Assessment Description
Reflective Journal will be compiled by students on a weekly basis. They will provide a
continuous record of learning and will allow students to express their considered views on
materials and subject topics. Student record of learning should be not less than 100 words for
each topic. Each segment should contain an outline of factual material covered in that topic,
some indication of further reading, and evaluation of issues raised.
Students must provide a record of Topics (Weeks) 2 to 14. Each journal entry must critically
evaluate the topic and its subject matter.
Assessment Requirements
General requirements: submitted on time; appropriate length; appropriate presentation (font
type and size, margins, stapled); free of spelling and grammatical errors; addresses the
assigned topic.
In order for students to receive an optimal mark, the Workbook Task must meet the
following:
 Completely meet general requirements.
 Be excellently written, logical, coherent, and lucid.
 Have excellent structure and organisation.
 Have a high level of critical thought, analysis, and argument.
 Be thoroughly researched with evidence of wide reading, independent thinking, and
originality.
 Have a high level of demonstrated knowledge of Islam, hadith, and the theories and
debates dealing with specific subject matter as well as a variety of issues.
 Have complete and accurate referencing of sources.
 Thoroughly and intelligently address the topic.
