Topic 1 Discussion topic: Scarcity Solutions Do some research on the country of Ethiopia and discuss:
Who in the Ethiopian society has the most difficult time dealing with scarcity? What do they need most? How can their society provide for their wants and needs? Why are they so impoverished? What can their governments do to help, or hinder their country’s development? Could not Ethiopia become a world class producer and exporter of goods? How would Ethiopia compare with Japan? Japan is a country relatively POOR in natural resources, yet it is an economic world powerhouse. What are the differences between the two countries?
Requirements for this discussion
This week’s DB questions seem fairly straight forward. However, there are many factors to consider, when answering them. The first thing your research will likely reveal is that this country is in dire need of water. So, it is, of course, something you should address. That isn’t where your research and answer should end, though. There are numerous other factors to consider. To receive full credit for this DB requirement, you need to demonstrate that you have reviewed reliable information and have a decent understanding of the situation in Ethiopia. PLEASE do not simply state the obvious such as, “Ethiopia needs more water, and the government needs to find a way to get more.” That is only an introduction to a decent answer, so you’ll have to elaborate. This response is NOT college-level work, if it is not followed by information that reveals that you have BOTH researched and analyzed the relevant material.
I realize that many of you have not had to really stretch yourselves to answer discussion board questions in other classes. Often the questions relate to material that can be taken directly from the textbook. We have questions like that too. This, however, is not one of them. This one requires you to go the extra mile.
I’m sure that the first seminar revealed that I am dedicated to your success. Believe me, I am. I will help you in any way I can to successfully complete this course. I can only do that, however, if you want it. I don’t expect perfection, but I do require effort.
So, here’s what you do: 1. Research the topic. I have provided a source below to help you get started. 2. Analyze the material. Be sure to ask yourself questions, while you’re doing this, such as: “What caused this in the first place?” “Could this have been prevented?” “What possible solutions are there to this problem?” “What outside influences could have caused this problem?” “What inside influences could have made this problem worse than it had to be?” 3. Answer the DB questions, thoroughly and clearly. 4. Cite your material and list your references.
