DIRECTIONS ON SUBSTANCE: There are two parts to this assignment. You need to answer one question from each part. You are invited to challenge any of the assumptions contained in any of the questions, although you must support your challenge with evidence and argument. There is no need to do any additional research, but if you use outside sources, you need to cite them. DIRECTIONS ON STYLE: Answer each question separately. Indicate which question you are answering. Double-space your typing. Do not use any cover binding. Make sure you email me a copy of your paper, in addition to the hard copy that you should hand in at class. Staple all parts of your paper together. Part A. Answer one of the following questions. (approx. 3-4 pages) 40% 1. Explain how a capitalist culture and work ethic developed in Puritan New England over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the North as a whole, by the end of the eighteenth century. Be sure to discuss the Calvinist ideas of predestination and calling, the practice of moral economy and its eventual decline, the Enlightenment, and the Second Great Awakening. 2. Explain how during the period 1607-1800, it seemed that oppressing people of color often formed the basis for increasing freedom and opportunity for white men. Make sure you explain how racism became a tool for exercising and justifying this oppression. Be sure, also, that you discuss the transition to slavery in 17th century Virginia, the impact of the Declaration of Independence on African-Americans, as well as the relations between white Americans and Native Americans in colonial and revolutionary America. You will have to use the documents that will be attached to cite.
